A relative newcomer to the tackle industry, 13 Fishing has made a big splash with its Concept reels and reasonably priced, high-quality rods. The new Omen line takes that innovation to the muskie market. The 8-foot, 7-inch heavy-action model I got my hands on made an impression right out of the tube. The reel seat has a rubber grip that makes palming super-comfortable. The rod also has a foam insert built into the cork handle of the butt section. I’ve had my share of rib rash from squeezing bare cork under my arm for 12 hours; this foam provides cushion and solves the problem. As far as I know, 13 Fishing is the first company to address the issue. I took the Omen out on all of my early-spring muskie jaunts this year and used it almost exclusively. It got a tough workout, and I liked the results.

HITS

The Omen I tested was rated for 2- to 6-ounce baits, but it cast my 7-plus-ounce swimbait flawlessly. This rod has a ton of power, but it still loads-up beautifully and sends lures a mile. It can quickly overtake even big fish and steer them into the net.

MISSES

The matte black finish seems to scar easily, but if you can live with a few minor cosmetic blemishes or just avoid throwing it in a pile with six other rods, it’s not a big deal.

THE BOTTOM LINE

The Omen is the perfect option for anyone looking for an exceptional muskie rod without the usual sticker shock. The Omen easily matches up with some sticks the cost twice as much. It’s simply a great, great rod for the money.
