He was honored for Outstanding Academic Achievement at SUNY Binghamton and elected to Phi Betta Kappa.

Experience

Almy is a prolific writer on all aspects of fishing, hunting, managing land for wildlife, and planting food plots for deer. He won numerous national awards for his writing, including Best Newspaper Article for a piece on the Joys of Float Fishing for the Washington Post. After writing the first book ever on fishing for trout with land-based insects (Tying & Fishing Terrestrials), he gave talks throughout the country to Federation of Fly Fishing groups and Trout Unlimited chapters. He has also lectured on a topic he knows well—life as an outdoor writer. He lists fly fishing for trout as his favorite pastime for immediate thrills, and managing the farm he lives on for whitetail deer as his favorite longer-term project. He has fished from the Arctic Circle to Venezuela, and lists fly fishing for peacock bass in the Cinaruco River in that country as one of his most memorable fishing trips, and hunting coastal grizzlies in British Columbia as his most memorable hunting expedition.
