Davis took a double major in Classics and Philosophy at Williams College. Later, he earned a Masters degree in Environmental Studies from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville.
Since selling his first article to a local newspaper in 1982 (for which he received the princely sum of $25), Davis has written for dozens of regional and national publications. He has also written for the Brunnier Art Museum at Iowa State University and the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, Wisconsin, and has served as a juror for the Woodson’s flagship exhibition, Birds in Art. His work appears in several anthologies of outdoor writing, and his story collection, The Tattered Autumn Sky, is among the 100 titles highlighted in Stephen J. Bodio’s A Sportsman’s Library. In addition to his writing about dogs, art, and the outdoors, he occasionally writes about music, food, drink, and whatever else happens to pique his interest.
