MREs are also known for their convenience, as they require no refrigeration and can be eaten cold if necessary. However, they often come with a flameless ration heater for warming the food. There is an easily understood direction on cooking them on the packaging. Follow the directions explicitly to get the best function from the heater. If you use too much water, they do not work well.

How Does Temperature Affect the Shelf Life of an MRE?

Temperature is a critical factor in determining how long MREs last. When stored at cooler temperatures, around 60°F (15.6°C), MREs can last up to 5-7 years. However, as the storage temperature increases, their shelf life decreases.
